Vřesovice: Hotels and Accommodation

Vřesovice is home to the Church of St. Peter and Paul and Vřesovice Castle; nearby are Předina Hill and the Štátule Lookout Tower.

History and Culture

The Church of St. Peter and Paul is the oldest architectural monument in Vřesovice. It has a Gothic chancel; its current three-nave form was created through an extension toward the end of the 17th century. The church has a free-standing bell tower dating from 1747, which houses three bells from 1990. In the park below the church are a Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary and a stylized Holy Sepulchre dating from 1882. The church can be visited by prior arrangement.

Vřesovice Castle was built between 1702 and 1704 under Abbot Norbert Želecký of Počenice. In hunting literature, it is considered a Baroque hunting lodge. The former castle chapel houses the Vřesovice Memorial, which preserves mainly written, photographic, and smaller material records from the village. It also contains a reconciliation cross dated 1599.

Further historical evidence can be found in the cemetery: the Chapel of the Holy Cross dates from 1717, and the entrance gate includes a statue of St. John of Nepomuk. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is a Baroque architectural monument in the Prostějov region and dates from the first half of the 18th century. In total, eleven immovable cultural monuments in Vřesovice are listed in the Central List of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

Local customs and events are also part of the cultural landscape. The “Hrkání” tradition has been continuously preserved in Vřesovice: before Easter, a procession of children carrying wooden rattles makes its way through the village. The “Pod hanáckým nebem” brass band festival is also held annually.

Nature and Landscape

At 312 meters, Předina is the highest elevation in the cadastral area of Vřesovice and is home to the Dobrochov transmitter. The Vřesůvka stream rises on the southern edge of Vřesovice and flows through the village. In the vicinity of Vřesovice, immediately north of the village edge on the right bank of the Vřesůvka, a sulfurous mineral spring emerges; its composition resembles that of the nearby Skalka spring.

In the vicinity of Vřesovice, between Dobrochov, Kelčice, and Vřesovice, the 10-meter-high wooden Štátule Lookout Tower stands on the 312-meter-high Předina Hill. It can be reached from Vřesovice via field paths. Admission to the lookout tower is free, and visits are at your own risk. The Dobrochov–Kelčice–Vřesovice–Výšovice cycle path was listed as completed in 2022.

The Vřesovice Memorial is open to the public once a year during the Feast of St. Peter and Paul. Throughout the year, it can be visited by prior telephone appointment with the municipal office. The nearest railway station is Pivín on the Olomouc–Nezamyslice line; it is 5 kilometers by road from Vřesovice.
