Jeskyně Na Pomezí is the largest cave system in crystalline limestone in the Czech Republic. Jeskyně Na Pomezí is protected as the NPP Jeskyně Na Pomezí National Nature Monument, covering an area of 20.60 hectares. The Na Pomezí caves are home to numerous winter colonies of bats; eleven species have been recorded there in total.

Nature

The Rychlebské hory – Sokolský hřbet Site of Community Importance includes the cadastral area of Vápenná. The Lom Žulový vrch (Brankopy) quarry is a flooded granite quarry that forms a pond near the summit of Žulový vrch. From Vápenná, the quarry can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail of approximately 4.5 kilometres. From the Lom Žulový vrch (Brankopy) quarry, there is a view north across the Žulovská pahorkatina and towards the church on Boží hora.

The mountains of Łupkowa, Pośrednia, Czartowiec and Klínový vrch [Skorošice-Horní Skorošice] are located in the vicinity of Vápenná.

Location

Vápenná lies on the road and railway connection from Dolní Lipová via Žulová onwards to Javorník.

Trails

The Latzelova stezka is a nine-kilometre route from Vápenná to Horní Lipová with eight stations. The Latzelova stezka through the Rychlebské hory provides information about karst caves, as well as the lives of local people and the processing of rock from the Jeseníky Mountains.

History and Culture

The shaft lime kiln in Vápenná, dating from the mid-19th century, is the last surviving evidence of the strong lime-production tradition in this locality.

In the wider regional surroundings of Vápenná are Otmuchów - Zamek, a castle, Trzebieszowice, a castle, the ruins of Edelštejn, and Studánka, a church.
