Zlate Hory: Hotels and accommodations

In Zlaté Hory, the trail of gold and ore mining leads from the open-air museum through historic buildings to an educational trail through the mining landscape.

Culture

Zlatorudné mlýny is a medieval open-air mining museum on the Olešnice River near the municipality of Zlaté Hory in the Údolí ztracených štol. At the open-air museum, visitors can try panning for gold using the provided gold pans. The site also includes fully functional replicas of water-powered gold mills from the 14th century, including a stamp mill for crushing gold ore.

Edelštejn in Zlaté Hory is classified as an important archaeological site. Advance registration is required to visit the Poštovní štola; the mine was declared a cultural monument in 1994.

History

The Městské muzeum Zlaté Hory is housed in the Stará pošta, which is considered the most beautiful building in Zlaté Hory’s urban conservation area. The museum presents local gold and ore mining through corresponding exhibitions, an extensive mineral collection, and models of medieval and more recent mine tunnels.

The Stará pošta was built in 1698 as the first post office in what was then Silesia.

Landscape

The Zlatohorská hornická naučná stezka is a 16-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends in Zlaté Hory. It has 15 educational stations. Along the trail, visitors can see depressions formed by collapsed tunnels and piles of stones left by people who washed material from gold-bearing streams.

The Zlaté Hory municipal tourist information centre sells stamps, souvenirs, postcards, maps and regional products.
