Hošťka has an almost 800-metre-long village square laid out as a linear village, flanked on both sides by continuous rows of former agricultural farmsteads. The village square of Hošťka, laid out as a linear village, is characterised by several ponds and dominated by the Church of St Margaret.

Village Structure and Church

The Church of St Margaret in Hošťka is a single-nave church with a rectangular floor plan and a presbytery that is polygonal on the outside and almost semicircular on the inside. It preserves original furnishings by the woodcarver Artschlag. Services are held in the Church of St Margaret every Sunday at 11 a.m. throughout the year.

A chapel dedicated to Saint Margaret is documented in Hošťka as early as 1707; the chapel was converted into a small church in 1744. After the fire, the church was expanded in 1889 with a façade and tower.

History

Hošťka was first mentioned in 1482 under the name Hosskowo. Hošťka was one of the most populous places in the Přimda Choden region. In the mid-16th century, the inhabitants of Hošťka guarded a section of the border as far as Vranči Pond. An imperial customs office operated in Hošťka until 1613.

In 1621, fierce fighting took place in the immediate vicinity of Hošťka between imperial troops and Swedish troops. In a major fire in Hošťka, a total of 55 farmsteads burned down in 1887. In 1930, the inhabitants of Hošťka made their living not only from agriculture but also from woodturning and mother-of-pearl processing.

Part of the Hošťka municipal area belongs to the Český les Protected Landscape Area. Hošťka lies in an area characterised by forestry, agriculture and recreation. In the broader context of the Český les landscape, extensive forests shape a diverse mosaic landscape of pastures, meadows and fallow land becoming overgrown again.

Cycle Route

On its 287-kilometre route from Všeruby to Měděnec, Cycle Route 36 passes through Hošťka. Cycle Route 36 is considered a major long-distance cycle route through the Český les.
