Kout na Šumavě lies in a valley basin surrounded on all sides by hills like a wreath. The oldest building in Kout na Šumavě is the fortress: in 1589, Count Jiří of Guttenstein purchased the Kout estate and had it built.

Culture and History

The former fortress is an originally Renaissance manor house and is historically connected to the nearby Rýzmberk Castle. In the centre of Kout na Šumavě, south of the former fortress at a crossroads, stands the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It was built in 1827 and, with its distinctive pyramid roof, octagonal lantern and small onion dome, contributes to the unmistakable character of the historic town centre.

The oldest part of the Church of St George is a chapel built in 1704. The church consists of a rectangular nave, a narrower polygonal presbytery, a sacristy and a tower. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk has stood by the church in Kout na Šumavě since the second half of the 17th century.

The Klobouk Gloriette is an open structure whose hat-shaped roof is supported by four stone pillars. During its repair, the year 1723 was found on a beam in 1973. Another historical connection is provided by the Pivovar Kout na Šumavě brewery, which was established in 1736 under the administration of the Stadion family.

A pilgrimage to St George's Day takes place every year, on the first Sunday after 24 April.
