In Vřeskovice, a protected ecclesiastical complex blends with visible traces of a former fortress and a landscape framed by wooded hills.

Culture and History

The protected complex of the Church of St. John the Baptist comprises the church, a mortuary, a bell tower and the associated grounds. A bricked-up early Gothic portal is located on the south side of the church.

The former Vřeskovice fortress stood behind the school building. A low stone wall is still visible today at House No. 38, which was built there. In 1455, the Lords of Roupov incorporated the Vřeskovice fortress, together with Krásný Úpor and Mstice, into their domain. A branch of the Drslaviců family had previously built the fortress as its seat.

Landscape

Vřeskovice lies in a depression open to the east towards Borovy. To the north, west and south, the village is bordered by wooded hills: Míchalice at 483 m, Holý vrch at 474 m, Kobylnice at 482 m, Ostrý vrch at 520 m, Kněžhora at 491 m, Stříbrnice at 538 m and Stramchý at 541 m.

Historically, the old church of Vřeskovice stood at the end of a spur, whose two sides fell away quite steeply.

Activities and Local Life

The sports complex of Tělovýchovná jednota Vřeskovice can also be used by non-members for volleyball and nohejbal. Vřeskovická šlápota is a traditional New Year’s hiking event.

There is a restaurant in the cultural centre of Vřeskovice.
