Chanovice Chateau is a Baroque chateau surrounded by a park; originally, a Gothic fortress stood on its site.

Nature and Views

The “Příroda a lesy Pošumaví” educational trail is 2.2 km long, can be walked in both directions, and is intended for pedestrians. It leads from the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in the chateau grounds through the park over Chlum Hill to the open-air Chanovice Museum of Folk Architecture. At nine stops, the educational trail provides information about significant plants, animals, and the geological conditions of the surrounding area. The observation tower on the educational trail is 31 metres high and offers views across the Šumava region from Český les to Českokrumlovsko, as well as over Blatensko and Brdy.

Culture and History

The Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross next to the chateau is a Baroque building dating from 1751–1764 and partially preserves elements of the former Gothic sanctuary. The Chanovice Open-Air Museum is a rescue project for endangered folk architecture structures in southwestern Bohemia. It presents historical forms of village housing, agriculture, domestic production, and crafts from the second half of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. Outside regular opening hours, groups of 10 or more people can visit by prior arrangement.

Events

Chanovice hosts the annual Crafts Day, a presentation of traditional crafts. The autumn Traditional Food Day is a regional festival in Chanovice.
