Hamry Na Šumavě: Hotels and Accommodation

On the educational trail from Hamry to Velký Ostrý, the final fifth of the route to one of the best-known peaks of the Bohemian Forest, the 1,293 m-high Velký Ostrý, is covered along a stony mountain path.

Hiking and Educational Trails

The 4 km-long Naučná stezka Úhlavským luhem educational trail leads along both banks of the Úhlava through natural areas of the river floodplain and is intended exclusively for pedestrians. It begins in Hamry at Kollerův dvůr, by a tourist shelter with an information board and map. Five stations provide information about the upper Úhlava, its hydrology, the forests, settlement and changes in the landscape. Four boardwalks lead through the wetlands; the trail also features beaver tracks and habitats with numerous protected plants and animals.

From Zadní Hamry, a green-marked hiking route leads after 3 km to the 4.5 km-long Brčálník educational trail, which focuses on history and nature and was opened in 2005. From Hamry–Hojsova Stráž railway station, a blue-marked hiking route runs through Hamry for 6 km to the Pod Statečekem trail junction; from there, Bílá Strž can be reached via a 1.3 km yellow-marked route. Another green-marked route leads from Hamry railway station to Zadní Hamry. From the road bridge over the Úhlava, a comfortable path then leads to the chapel in Křížkov–Kreutzwinkel; the total distance is approximately 2 km.

Nature and Winter

Bílá Strž is the highest waterfall in the Bohemian Forest. It lies in the valley of the Bílý potok at an altitude of 940 m and has a drop of 7 m. Near Bílá Strž, there is a viewing terrace overlooking the natural landscape. The Bílá Strž National Nature Reserve protects a deeply incised rocky valley of the Bílý potok with numerous steps, rapids and waterfalls, as well as natural forest communities.

Bílá Strž can also be reached by bicycle from Špičák or Hamry. In winter, cross-country ski tracks also run around the Bílá Strž gorge. In the immediate vicinity of Hamry, about 1 km from the village, stands a 250-year-old beech tree.

Culture and Technology

The chapel in Křížkov–Kreutzwinkel was founded and built in 1730–1731 by the yeoman Jan Torner near the former road to Železná Ruda, in the group of houses known as Křížkov (Kreutzwinkel). The pilgrimage site of Křížkov–Kreutzwinkel was restored in 2007 by the municipality of Hamry together with the Künische Gemeinde Hammern association and the Bavarian municipality of Lam, with the support of EU funds.

The church and the Way of Our Lady of Sorrows in Hamry house a Baroque image of the Virgin Mary, a folk-style linden-wood Madonna with the Infant Jesus, and modern reverse-glass paintings. In the cadastral area of Hamry, about 5 km upstream in the Úhlava valley, there is an old pumped-storage hydroelectric power station with a small reservoir, which is recognized as a technical monument. The pumped-storage hydroelectric power station began operating in 1930 as the first facility of its kind in Czechoslovakia.
