Discover Prasily: Hiking Trails, Nature and History

Prášilské jezero was formed by a glacier about 10,000 years ago. A route from Prášily leads to the summit of Poledník. A 37 m-high observation tower stands at the summit and offers panoramic views. The route between Poledník and Gsenget is open only from 15 July to 15 November. The route and seasonal details belong to different planning steps: one describes the scope of a hike, while the other indicates the period during which a particular trail is open.

At Poledník, legal overnight accommodation for one night is possible at the so-called emergency overnight site. The public campsite is in season 2026 from 10 April to 1. In calendar planning, two different time models stand side by side: a single night at this site and a seasonal period.

For cycling, Cycle Route 33 runs through Prášily and crosses Šumava National Park from Železná Ruda to Lipno. The Stodůlecký Bridge over the Křemelná is closed to cyclists and pedestrians because of its poor condition. The cycle route and the closure provide different kinds of guidance for planning: one is a connection through the national park, while the other is a specific restriction at a structure. The combination of hiking and cycling can thus be considered separately according to activity type and trail character. For personal selection, the route, summit, overnight site, campsite, bridge, garden and educational trail can be viewed as separate reference points.

The establishment of the settlement of Prášily is connected with the founding of a glassworks. At the Prášily Botanical Garden, the flora of the Bohemian Forest is presented through native plants as well as examples of wetland, dry, bog and heath habitats. The garden houses a collection of 400 daffodils, considered one of the largest in the Czech Republic, and complements its plant collections with art objects made of wood and stone. The division according to habitats and the combination of plants with wood and stone art give this place several clearly distinguishable perspectives for exploration.

The “Polom in the Mountain Spruce Forest” educational trail illustrates the vitality of nature. For personal selection, nature-oriented trails, botanical habitats and historical traces can be considered side by side as different topics. The differences between a long hike, a cycling connection, seasonally restricted trails and botanical-historical sites help structure one's daily rhythm according to duration, time period and area of interest. Poledník was originally a military facility and offers views of the Bohemian Forest's unique natural landscape.
