Šlapanice between History, Nature and Hiking Trails

In Šlapanice, historic buildings, natural features, marked trails and traditional events stand as distinct topics alongside one another. This gives the town different starting points for planning a trip, without prescribing a specific daily itinerary.

The Šlapanice Museum is located in the town centre, in a Renaissance schola­stery on the main square. The museum presents exhibitions on different themes, each supplemented by a play area or programmes for children. The scholastery was built in 1613. The museum site therefore combines a Renaissance building with changing exhibition themes and an explicitly mentioned addition for children.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (“Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie”) is the oldest and most valuable historic building in Šlapanice. The original Romanesque church was probably built at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century. The medieval church was surrounded by a wall with bastions and formed a fortified church complex. Its age, architectural style and fortifications thus represent different historical aspects of this sacred building.

In Šlapanice, Stolpersteine are set into pavements in front of the respective properties at several addresses. They are therefore not tied to a single location, but are found at several sites throughout the town.

The château in Šlapanice was built in the Rococo style as a country estate and dates from approximately the second half of the 18th century. During the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, the château became a French military field hospital. Its history therefore encompasses both its original function as a country estate and its use during the historic wartime events.

The Andělka a Čertovka nature monument covers 3.37 hectares on steep slopes above the right bank of the Říčka at the northern edge of Šlapanice. The Návrší nature monument protects heat-loving communities on Kulm conglomerates in the cadastral area of Šlapanice. The Říčka watercourse flows through the central part of Šlapanice’s cadastral area, including the town itself. Velký hájek is almost entirely covered by deciduous forest. The natural features of Šlapanice thus include two nature monuments, the Říčka watercourse and Velký hájek, which consists almost entirely of deciduous forest.

A yellow-marked hiking trail begins in Šlapanice and leads via Santon, Tvarožná and Jiříkovice to Prace. The Slavkov Battlefield cycling route runs along the Sokolnice–Prace–Šlapanice route. The two routes are clearly distinguished by their designated use: one is marked as a hiking trail, while the other is designated as a cycling route.

Šlapanice’s traditional events calendar includes a Masopust procession on the Sunday afternoon before Ash Wednesday and a wine tasting in Bedřichovice held on a Saturday in April. Both events occupy their own place in the annual calendar and complement the town’s cultural and scenic themes with organised events.
