Culture and History

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Žatčany is considered one of the oldest churches in Moravia; a church probably stood here as early as the 12th century. Its foundations preserve masonry and buttresses from this early construction phase. The Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in the Baroque style between 1616 and 1618 and, as part of the church complex, is a protected cultural monument. Inside, there is a wooden altar designed as the Holy Sepulchre, as well as an artificial stalactite cave with a statue of the saint.

Náves is the oldest and largest historic area of the municipality of Žatčany and has the highest concentration of monuments and public buildings. In Žatčany, the tradition of Svatomartinské hody, the Feast of Saint Martin, has also been maintained for around 400 years.

Nature

The Písky natural monument is a 2.24-hectare protected area in the cadastral area of Žatčany. It consists of loose sandy areas originating from oil extraction carried out around 50 to 60 years ago. Scattered trees and shrubs, as well as denser stands along the edges, are also present. The Písky protected area is safeguarded because of its abandoned spoil heaps and waste dumps, and as a habitat for psammophilous flora and fauna. Písky can be reached across pathless terrain; it is more than 250 m from the road.

Educational Trails and Cycle Routes

The Žatčany včera a dnes educational trail comprises 15 information panels and forms a circular route just under 7 km long.
