Encovany is characterized by protected architectural heritage in the village center, named local events, and surroundings featuring mountains, historic sites, and various forest communities.

Culture and History

Encovany Castle stands in the center of the village of the same name and is protected as a cultural monument. The Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels is also protected: it has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958 and is a small religious building in the Classicist style, constructed between 1815 and 1855. At present, the chapel is open to the public only during community events.

In the wider region surrounding Encovany lies the historic site of the Theresienstadt concentration camp and ghetto. The Hrad Střekov castle, as well as the ruins of Hazmburk and Hrádek, are also located in this wider region.

Events

On September 9, 2023, the Sousedská slavnost was held for the fifth time; that year, it was moved from the log cabin to the village center. Its program included a traditional demonstration of firefighting equipment by the volunteer fire brigade of the municipality of Polepy, featuring three emergency vehicles, as well as an educational first-aid presentation with the opportunity to practice on a training mannequin.

Another Encovany tradition is the O pohár Vodníka Encovanského competition. At this event, children and adults competed in different competition categories. Čarodějnice is considered the first community and cultural event of the new season in Encovany. During Encovanský dětský den 2022, children walked along a pond and completed various tasks at a total of eight stations.

Nature and Surroundings

The Hořidla mountain is located in the immediate vicinity of Encovany. The Lada, Sedlo, and Sovice mountains are also found in the surrounding area. The area around Encovany is described as featuring Pannonian steppe oak forests, Eurosiberian steppe oak forests, and oak-hornbeam forests of the Galio-Carpinetum association in the Skalky u Třebutiček area.
