Želkovice: Hotels and Accommodation

The Roman Catholic filial Church of St. Peter and Paul stands on a hill above the western edge of Želkovice. The church and the cemetery wall surrounding it are continuously maintained.

Culture and History

The rotunda has a slightly oval ground plan and opens to the east into a rectangular-ended chancel that originally had a horseshoe-shaped apse. A Neo-Romanesque nave was added to the rotunda between 1852 and 1853 according to plans by the engineer Wetzl.

Embedded in the rotunda's masonry is a sculpture of a Turk's head, commemorating the Russo-Austrian war against the Turks. The boundary wall of the church grounds has a wrought-iron double-leaf gate.

At the northern upper end of the elongated village green stands a statue of Saint Joseph. The statue and its pedestal are made of sandstone. It is a high-quality Late Baroque work by an artist who has so far remained unknown; a dedicatory inscription gives the year 1762.

Landscape

There are extensive orchards around Želkovice, predominantly apple orchards. In spring, the white or pink blossoms of the fruit trees provide views of the surrounding landscape.

In the immediate vicinity of Želkovice, a broad path leads from the Church of St. Peter and Paul southeastwards to Lounek. Its slopes and summit offer views of the surrounding agricultural landscape. The summit of Lounek is mostly fenced off, but can be reached from the east. Spring pheasants' eyes, pasque flowers, and other rare plants grow in the steppe grassland on its summit.

Tradition

The municipality of Želkovice has announced the traditional event Stavění Máje for the morning of Saturday, May 2, 2026. At Stavění Máje, men can take part in erecting the maypole, while women and girls can take part in decorating it.
