Křešice lies in the Elbe Valley on the right bank of the Labe, northeast of its course. Here, the Polabian Plain gives way to a hilly landscape adjoining the Bohemian Central Uplands.
Nature and Trails
Holý vrch and the surrounding land in the cadastral area of Křešice have been protected as a nature reserve since 2013. Footpaths run along its northern and southern slopes; however, no official path leads all the way to the summit.
Křemín, which rises to 244 m, is a mountain of interest to tourists; all parts of the municipality of Křešice can be seen from it. The Labská stezka cycle route also passes through Křešice.
Culture and History
The pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Křešice is a Baroque sacred building constructed in 1708–1712 and expanded in 1729–1732. It can be reached on foot via paths from Encovanská Street, Černá cesta or Bezručova Street.
The spring next to the pilgrimage church in Křešice was lined with masonry in 1703. In 1704, an ecclesiastical commission confirmed eighteen healings described as miraculous that were associated with the site. Regular services are held in the Parish Church of St Matthew in Křešice.
Vincenc Zahradník, a priest, philosopher and poet, is buried in the cemetery in Křešice; a memorial plaque at the local primary school commemorates his work in Křešice.
The early Baroque complex of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Zahořany comprises a church surrounded by a cemetery with a massive enclosing wall, a four-storey masonry bell tower and a pentagonal cemetery chapel. Inside, Kramolín’s figurative biblical paintings, three altars including a rare Rococo altar, a Baroque high altar and a Baroque organ have been preserved. In the southern part of Zahořany, about 100 m to the northeast, there is a masonry wayside shrine dating from 1668 that is listed as a cultural monument. On 23 May 2025, the nationwide event Noc kostelů opened the church; on 29 May 2026, Křešice and Zahořany took part in Noc kostelů again.
