Srbice: Hotels and Accommodation

Srbice can be explored through two distinctive themes: the water landscape of the Modlany Reservoir and the town’s industrial and mining development. The artificial body of water formed by the Modlany Reservoir on the Modlanský potok is a significant landscape feature within the administrative area of Srbice. Road traffic and the nearby railway connection accelerated the industrial and mining development of Srbice.

Nature and Culture

Particularly protected animal species have been recorded at and around Modlanský Pond, including black-crowned night herons, great crested grebes, nightingales, corn buntings, common swifts, and sand lizards.

The ruins of Hrad Kysperk are located in the immediate vicinity of Srbice. The surroundings of Srbice also include Hrad Střekov, a castle; the Eastern Ore Mountains Wildlife Park, a zoo; the ruins of Sukoslav; and Osek Monastery. Glaberův vrch, a mountain; Scharspitze, a mountain; and Bouřňák, a mountain, are also located nearby.

History

The first documented written reference to Srbice dates from 1403. The older name Řeřevice is believed to be connected with near-surface coal seams, which could often ignite at their outcrops.

The settlement originally undermined by mining has disappeared; the place names Staré Srbice and Nové Srbice are still used today. The coal mines in Srbice employed around 600 miners in the first half of the 20th century.

Leisure

The already-established recreation zone in Nové Srbice offers opportunities for short periods of daily relaxation. Recreational development in Srbice is supported, among other things, by designated cycle paths and purpose-built trails.

After several years, the Srbice Volunteer Fire Brigade revived the tradition of erecting a maypole in the village square by the chapel. On April 30, 2019, the volunteer fire brigades from Srbice held a witch-burning celebration for children from Srbice and the surrounding area.
