Valkeřice features an enclosed valley landscape with forests, permanent grassland and distinctive historical traces. The Valkeřice Valley is an enclosed valley of the Dolský potok, surrounded by flat, elongated ridges and cones of a volcanic mountain range. About one third of Valkeřice’s cadastral area is forested, while a considerable part consists of permanent grassland.
Landscape and Trails
In the surrounding forests, about 1 km west of Valkeřice, stands the small stone lookout tower on the 589 m-high Kohout. The tower was built in 1908 by the Deutsche Turisten association. From Valkeřice, an approximately 1.5 km-long access trail leads to the summit. The route initially follows the former blue-marked hiking trail, which is now marked as a red riding trail, and then branches off onto the former blue-marked turnoff on the left to the summit. After its restoration, the lookout tower was reopened to the public on 16 April 2011.
Culture and History
Valkeřice was formed by the union of the two settlements of Elkeřice and Pertoltice, which were first mentioned in historical sources in 1363. The village is home to parish house No. 37, a two-storey masonry building with a later two-storey wing on the west side.
The villagescape includes traditional log houses, half-timbered houses and several Upper Lusatian house types; most of them are state-protected monuments. In the centre of Valkeřice there is also the remnant of a small hunting château, which forms a distinctive focal point in the landscape.
In 1700, František Antonín Špork had a two-storey, three-winged château built in Valkeřice, allegedly on the site of an earlier fortress. It was used primarily as a residence for the estate’s rulers during hunting trips.
Quarries and Facilities
The Znělcové lomy (U lomu) comprise partially flooded extraction pits with ponds. Cleaning work and the construction of facilities for all visitors have begun at the Valkeřické trachytové lomy. An event described as an “opening” of the Valkeřické trachytové lomy is listed in Valkeřice for Saturday, 14 May.
