Cycling and Hiking

A tourist hiking trail runs between České Hamry and Hammerunterwiesenthal. The 73-kilometre cycle route from Vejprty to Chomutov reaches České Hamry at kilometre 7.

The cycle route from Vejprty to Chomutov is classified as challenging and runs along roads and the Krušnohorská magistrála. The 14-kilometre hiking excursion from Kovářská to Königsmühle initially follows the road towards České Hamry before turning towards Háj shortly before the descent into the settlement.

History and Culture

České Hamry was established on the Polavský potok, which forms the border between Bohemia and Saxony. The settlement probably originated in the 16th century as a community of people who processed iron from the nearby mining district around Kovářská.

After the Battle of White Mountain, the sister settlement of Hammerunterwiesenthal was established on the opposite bank. A large part of České Hamry’s inhabitants fled there to escape religious persecution.

The Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in České Hamry is a simple church dating from the 1920s and continues to serve the small local Catholic community.

Jaroslav Soukup was shot on 26 August during an evening patrol on the road from České Hamry to the national border and died of his injuries on 21 October.
