Velemín: Hotels and accommodations

Velemín lies in a picturesque valley below the summit of Milešovka and is a gateway to the landscape of the České středohoří. Around the town, striking volcanic mountains, protected natural areas, hiking trails, and historic buildings combine to create a diverse landscape.

Landscape and nature

The entire area around Velemín lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. There are more than 500 km of marked hiking trails there. Part of Milešovka is designated as a national nature reserve. The reserve protects forest ecosystems on the slopes of the distinctive trachyte cone, as well as rock and scree communities.

A 19-metre-high observation tower stands on Milešovka, offering views of the surrounding landscape. The unique phenomenon of ventaroles can also be observed on Boreč, particularly in winter. The Boreč educational trail begins in the village of Režný Újezd below the chapel and includes nine stations and two viewpoints.

The picturesque Opárenské Valley is approximately 6 km long and stretches from Velemín to Malé Žernoseky. The Opárenský Mill serves as a centre for environmental education.

Trails and excursion destinations

A green-marked hiking trail runs around Milešovský rybník, connecting Velemín and Milešov, and is suitable for hiking and cycling trips. One possible route to the ruins of Oparno Castle leads from Velemín along a green-marked hiking trail through the Opárenské Valley.

The ruins of Oparno Castle lie north of the village of Oparno in the cadastral area of the municipality of Velemín. Another prominent landmark is the 553 m-high mountain Ostrý, which is of volcanic origin. It lies between Milešov, Velemín, Kocourov, and Březno; the ruins of Ostrý Castle are located on its summit. Its slopes are covered with mixed forest.

Velemín is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the D8 motorway. The D8 connects Prague with Ústí nad Labem and Germany.

Culture and history

Milešov is home to the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, a Baroque religious building dating from 1669–1680. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and belongs to Velemín in the Ústecký Region.

The restored Calvary Chapel in Milešov is a protected cultural monument. Milešov Castle Park is also home to the Gloriet, a Baroque garden pavilion built between 1701 and 1708 by the then lord of the castle, Jan Leopold Hrzán z Harasova, with the help of Italian master builders.
