In Žatec, the extraordinary city skyline within the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble is shaped by the vertical landmarks of the hop-drying kilns and the tall chimneys of the sulfur chambers.

City and History

The reconstructed synagogue in Žatec features richly decorated interiors, a gallery and a rabbi’s house. It also houses a permanent exhibition on the Jewish history of the region. Meder House is one of the oldest and most valuable burgher houses in Žatec and offers interactive exhibitions on the history of Žatec.

The K. A. Polánka Regional Museum presents the history of the area around Žatec through unique collections and divides the museum visit into four tours. The tour of the main building includes the exhibition “Žatecký stroj času” (“Žatec Time Machine”).

Museums and Exhibitions

The Žatec Hop Museum is housed in a technical monument that is an example of industrial utilitarian architecture from the end of the 19th century. Covering 4,000 m², it showcases the development of hop cultivation from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The Žatec Hop Museum is the world’s largest exhibition of its kind.

The Žatec Hop Museum offers children the game “Cesta chmelového skřítka Hopa”, at the end of which participants receive a small gift. The Renaissance malt house houses a permanent exhibition on malting featuring archaeological finds; in an interactive exhibition, visitors can make their own pencil.

City Views and Technology

The tour of the Hop Lighthouse uses an elevator with 3D projection and offers views of Žatec. The Temple of Hops and Beer includes the Hop Astronomical Clock, which is considered the only one of its kind in the world. The temple has an observation tower with views of Žatec’s city center and the surrounding hop fields, as well as a charging station for e-bikes; charging cables for Universal, Bosch and Shimano types can be borrowed there.
