Culture

Beneath the city lies the Jihlava underground tunnel system, which is 25 kilometers long in total. Above ground, the Brána Matky Boží is the last surviving historic city gate in Jihlava; it offers a viewpoint and an exhibition. The original watchtower summit provides a panorama of central Jihlava.

The Muzeum Vysočiny Jihlava presents the history of Jihlava from the Gothic period through the 20th century. Its natural history exhibitions explore the aquatic environments, meadows, and forests of the Českomoravská vrchovina region. The Dům Gustava Mahlera presents the coexistence and interconnections of Czech, German, and Jewish cultures in Jihlava.

The Church of St. James the Greater in Jihlava is a national cultural monument and the city’s most important parish church. Tours of the interior and historic roof structures are available. Guided tours of the Stříbrný dům explain the history of one of the oldest burgher houses in Jihlava and display furnishings from the royal mint that were discovered in the courtyard of the house during renovation work. Jihlava Town Hall can also be visited as part of guided tours organized by Brána Jihlavy.

Nature

Gustav Mahler Park combines water, undulating lawns, sharply defined and stone elements with the historic site of the zwinger, the course of the city walls, and the exposed foundations of a burned-down synagogue.

Brewing tradition

By prior arrangement, Pivovar Jihlava offers tours of the brewhouse, fermentation room, and lager cellars, ending with a beer tasting. Along the Pivovarská naučná stezka, visitors can learn more about Jihlava’s brewing tradition at twelve information panels.
