Kněžice: Hotels and accommodation

Kněžice’s written history dates back to 1222: that year, the settlement was mentioned in writing for the first time. This written mention is considered the oldest written mention of a settlement in the wider Stonařovsko, Jihlavsko and Brtnicko region.

Culture and history

An important sacred building is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Kněžice. In the first quarter of 2024, it was declared a cultural monument, including its movable furnishings. The chapel is a small late Baroque sacred building with a square floor plan and a polygonal termination to the south. Its furnishings include a life-size Baroque wooden statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, probably created around 1723 by an artist whose identity is unknown today, and considered a valuable example of contemporary craftsmanship.

The Church of Saint James the Elder in Kněžice probably dates from the 13th century. Its oldest Romanesque section was built by the same workshop as the Basilica of Saint Procopius in Třebíč.

The wider regional surroundings of Kněžice also include Roštejn [Doupě], a castle, Janštejn, a ruin, as well as the churches of Svatá Markéta and U Svaté Magdalena.

Nature and landscape

The U Trojáku Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral territory of Kněžice u Třebíče. It protects an old beech stand growing on a site with fresh fir-beech forests.

The mountains of Kalvárie, Sokolíčko, Rozhledna and Březí are located in the surroundings of Kněžice.

Activities

CykloKlub Kněžice has been organizing the Bike Maraton Kněžice for many years. The Chaloupky demonstration garden can be visited independently free of charge; guided tours are available by prior arrangement for a fee agreed upon in advance.
