Kremsier: Discover the Castle, Gardens and Culture
In Kremsier, the gardens and castle of Kroměříž form an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European baroque princely residence with its gardens. The location adds two geographical points of reference to this historical picture: Kroměříž lies at the site of a former ford across the Morava River and at the foot of the Chřiby mountain range.
Culture
The Arcibiskupský zámek was built by the archbishops of Olomouc as a summer residence. Its gallery displays works by important European painters from the 15th to the 18th century. The castle's historic furnishings also include the so-called Stará knihovna. In three halls, it preserves around 88,000 volumes as well as a music archive containing more than 6,000 baroque compositions.
The Muzeum Kroměřížska dedicates an exhibition to the decisive events that shaped the development of Kroměříž between 1848 and 1948. In addition, six exhibition halls offer an overview of the work of the artist Max Švabinský, who was born in Kroměříž. The museum therefore focuses both on the development of the city and on the work of one of its renowned artists.
Nature
The Podzámecká zahrada covers 64 hectares and contains rare trees from all over the world, three ponds, streams and romantic garden areas decorated with sculptures. The garden complex also includes an animal area. Peacocks, swans, ducks and chickens roam freely there. The Podzámecká zahrada is freely accessible all year round.
The Květná zahrada has preserved its historic appearance to this day. A Foucault pendulum is located in the central space of the rotunda in the Květná zahrada. It was installed in 1908 on the initiative of the Kroměříž grammar-school professor František Nábělek; its movement demonstrates the Earth's rotation.
There are also clearly designated destinations and routes outside the garden complexes. The summit of Barbořina offers impressive views of Haná, the Hostýnské vrchy and, in particular, the city of Kroměříž. The approximately 1-kilometre-long Naučná stezka veverky Čiperky educational trail teaches children about life in the forest, including the animals living there and their food. The Šlajza area includes a 1.5-kilometre running circuit. The Šlajza recreation area offers shelters, two fire pits for roasting sausages, benches and bicycle stands.
