Komňa – Hotels, Culture and Nature

The monument to J. A. Komenský was opened in 1992 in a listed granary. The exhibition there is accessible on request; calling at least one day in advance is recommended.

Another historic site is the Obydlí zvěrokleštiče, a listed house dating from 1850. An exhibition there presents the once widespread and now extinct craft of zvěrokleštičství. This exhibition is also accessible on request; calling at least one day in advance is recommended.

The Church of St. James the Elder in Komňa is an Empire-style building dating from 1842–1846. In July, the Komenské hody festival takes place around St. James’s Day on the 25th. It is held on the nearest weekend or on a weekend chosen by the priest. On Saturday, the Komňané brass band and the Podšable folklore ensemble jointly hold a costumed church-fair procession with “právem”.

In February or March, the Fašank tradition is observed in Komňa. Today, Fašank always takes place on the preceding Saturday and is characterized by a sword dance that has survived in only three municipalities in Moravian Slovakia.

Zuvačov was a Gothic castle and was already considered abandoned in 1517. Its remains lie about 1.5 km east of Komňa on a separate hill. A footpath with simple steps made from wooden logs has been created to provide access.

The Naučná stezka Koménka educational trail begins at Nový Světlov Chateau and ends in Komňa. It is easy and has only slight changes in elevation. Its route follows the Koménka stream through the beautiful surroundings of the valley floodplains. The path to the Poutnické místo is lined with six stations featuring quotations from Jan Amos Komenský.

The Lom Rasová natural monument lies 2.5 km southeast of Komňa. It is an abandoned sandstone quarry partly filled with water, home to endangered plant and animal species. Modrá voda, another small flooded quarry, is also located near Komňa. It can be reached either directly from Komňa or from Motorest Rasová via a green-marked trail.
