Medlovice: Hotels at the Foot of the Chřiby Hills – Ceramics and Cycling Routes
Medlovice lies at the foot of the Chřiby Hills. The village brings together linguistic and craft traditions with memorial sites, festive customs, a distinctive quarry and cycling routes in the surrounding area. The craft traditions in Medlovice include two pottery workshops practicing traditional handcrafting, historic evidence from various periods and the Medlovický Quarry with its unusual geological exposure.
Culture
The Slovácko dialect is spoken in Medlovice. Part of the regional heritage also remains visible in clothing: older women still wear garments featuring elements of the Podhorácko folk costume. Local architectural and memorial sites include a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in 1866. In 1930, a monument to T. G. Masaryk was unveiled in Medlovice. After the war, the bust of T. G. Masaryk and a memorial plaque commemorating those who fell in the Second World War were reinstalled.
Local traditions include the Slovácké hody on 16 October, the feast day of Saint Gall. Easter processions with rattles are also still maintained. A costumed group took part in the Slovácké hody s právem 2025. The form of the hody rights tradition in Medlovice preserves an element of tradition connected with the village’s former affiliation with the Buchlov estate.
Crafts
There are two pottery workshops in Medlovice practicing traditional handcrafting. Visitors can choose ceramic products there and may even make a cup or vase themselves. The Náplavovi Pottery Workshop in Medlovice is considered worth visiting. It produces traditional utility ceramics such as cups, bowls, teapots, containers and jugs entirely by hand on the potter’s wheel.
Landscape
The abandoned Medlovický Quarry, a porcellanite quarry, offers a unique complete profile exposure of porcellanite and is the only site of its kind in Moravia. Red, violet, blue-gray and brown porcellanites are exposed in the quarry to a thickness of 5 meters. The Medlovický Quarry is freely accessible; by car, it is possible to drive to within 250 meters.
