Salaš U Velehradu: Observation Tower, Nature and History

The Salašské pěnovce Natural Monument lies in the cadastral area of Salaš u Velehradu, above a right-bank tributary of the Salaška, approximately 1.2 kilometres northwest of Salaš. Salašské pěnovce protects the habitat of forest tufa springs. In the upper part of the Salašské pěnovce slope are two smaller forest tufa springs. The protected area is thus precisely described by its location at the tributary, the slope and these distinctive springs.

The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk in Salaš is a subsidiary church of the Velehrad Basilica. Construction began in May 1933, and it was solemnly consecrated on 8 October 1933. The chapel is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Its ecclesiastical affiliation, the start of construction, the consecration date and its dedication are the fixed key dates in the history of this sacred building.

The Salaš tragedy took place on 29 April 1945 in Vápenice near Salaš. Nineteen men and one woman were executed in the tragedy; most of them were residents of Salaš. The present form of the memorial to the victims of the Salaš tragedy dates from 1985. The memorial includes monuments bearing the names of all the victims of the tragedy.

The marked hiking access to the Salaš Observation Tower leads from Velehrad along a blue-marked hiking route to Salaš. From the signpost in the lower part of Salaš, the route continues along a yellow-marked route into the upper part of the village. The Obecní úřad stop is recommended for the ascent to the Salaš Observation Tower. Bus routes run from Staré Město via Velehrad to Salaš. Thus, for the route described, both the sequence of colour-marked routes and the stated bus stop are specified.
