Hotels in Strání: Sword Dance, Glass and Velká Javořina

For more than 200 years, Strání has continuously maintained a sword dance tradition. The “Pod šable” gives the town a clearly recognizable cultural identity; in Strání–Květná, the Sklárna Květná 1794 glassworks adds a craft-focused dimension. In addition, trails lead into the landscape of the White Carpathians and to Velká Javořina.

Culture

The sword dance tradition associated with carnival processions in the Uherskobrodsko region has survived in only three municipalities, including Strání. The famous “Pod šable” sword dance is associated with Fašank in Strání; an annual festival of carnival traditions is also connected with the performance of the dance.

The traditional customary form of the sword dance in Strání includes five men with wooden swords and a Gazda, who leads the procession with a wooden roasting spit. A characteristic element is the “vytínání”: under the pretext of an offense, one of the dancers is ritually beaten. The “Pod šable” has also preserved a comparatively unchanged song structure.

Glass

The Sklárna Květná 1794 Museum in Strání–Květná presents the history and art of glassmaking. Sklárna Květná 1794 is one of the oldest glassworks in the Czech Republic and was founded in 1794. Visitors can observe traditional techniques of artisanal glassmaking there.

Guided tours of Sklárna Květná 1794 must be reserved in advance, preferably at least one day beforehand. They take place exclusively in the morning and in Czech, and last approximately 45 minutes. These fixed conditions are essential when planning the timing of a visit.

Nature

Located near Strání on the Moravian-Slovak border, Velká Javořina is the highest mountain in the White Carpathians, at 970 m. In the Velká Javořina massif, the Javorina National Nature Reserve protects original deciduous forests, especially species-rich beech forests and ravine forests. In the summit area, these forests have a primeval character.

Trails

Hiking trails to Velká Javořina lead from Velká nad Veličkou and from Strání–Květná. The return section of the tourist route from Strání–Květná follows the green trail markers through Javorinský prales.

The yellow-marked Naučná stezka Květná educational trail leads through forests and meadows below Velká Javořina. The U Cicůrku spring can also be reached via this educational trail. It is a mountain spring in the Květná district of Strání.
