Hotels in Jestrabi – Pilgrimage, Customs and Houses of Southern Wallachia
Jestřabí is home to a chapel built as a rural religious structure from white bricks and modeled on the Neo-Romanesque style. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Svatý Hostýn and stands on the site of an old belfry on the village square.
Culture and Traditions
A stone cross dating from 1906 also stands on the same village square. Every year, a pilgrimage mass is held at the chapel on 15 August for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The pilgrimage itself takes place on the nearest Sunday before or after this date.
Local customs also include the masked procession held during the carnival season, known in Jestřabí as “fašanky” and preserved there as an old local tradition. The Easter custom of “tragačování” has also been passed down from generation to generation. This is a clapper tradition involving the so-called “tragači”.
The appearance of the village is shaped by original houses featuring the folk architecture typical of Southern Wallachia. In addition, four original agricultural buildings from the 19th century, including barns, have been preserved in Jestřabí. Alongside the chapel, the stone cross and the traditional customs, this means that different forms of the local cultural heritage stand side by side.
Nature and Landscape
The forests in the cadastral area of Jestřabí are characterized by mixed stands of oak and hornbeam. The mountains Rubaný Háj, Holý vrch, Kobylinec and Nad Oboru are located in the vicinity of Jestřabí. Each of these four mountains is in the immediate surroundings of the village.
The wider regional surroundings of Jestřabí also include the Starý Světlov ruins, Lešná Castle, Malenisko Church and U Kapliček Church. The village’s geographical and cultural-historical connections therefore extend beyond its immediate surroundings, although the individual destinations do not belong to the same geographical area.
