Zlin: Hotels between Functionalist Architecture and Green River Landscapes
Zlin combines a distinctive architectural heritage with a green landscape along the Dřevnice River. The city is a characteristic example of Functionalist urban planning and interwar architecture. At the same time, a specific walk leads through the Přílucká landscape into the surrounding area; another route is Mladcovská Skalka–Přední vrch. Culture, urban history, and nature thus exist side by side in different facets of the same destination.
Culture and Architecture
A central cultural venue is the 14|15 Baťa Institute. It houses the Museum of South East Moravia in Zlin, the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts, and the František Bartoš Regional Library. Visitors can also see three permanent exhibitions: “Princip Baťa: Dnes fantazie, zítra skutečnost”, “+ - Zlín”, and “František Bartoš: Pedagog, jazykovědec, etnograf”.
The 14|15 Baťa Institute was created by converting two former Baťa factory buildings into a cultural centre. Another distinctive building is the Tomáš Baťa Memorial, a Functionalist structure made of concrete, glass, and steel. The combination of materials, architectural form, and urban history is exemplary of Zlin’s architectural profile.
Events
Every year during the summer season, the 14|15 Baťa Institute organises a guided bus tour of Baťa architecture in Zlín for the general public. The tour therefore focuses not only on a single building but on Baťa architecture in Zlín as a unified subject. Another recurring annual cultural event is the ZLÍN FILM FESTIVAL. Every year, it screens almost 300 films from almost 50 countries and is the oldest festival of its kind in the world.
Nature and Walking Routes
The Dřevnice River valley, in which Zlín is spread out, is lush and green. The walk through the Přílucká landscape provides a specific way to access the countryside. After about 470 metres, it reaches Přílucký rybník, one of the most picturesque natural landscapes in the area around Zlín. The same walk also leads to a protected service tree. The approximate distance of 470 metres remains an orientation value.
The Mladcovská Skalka–Přední vrch route can be completed on foot in about one and a half hours.
To the Tomáš Baťa Memorial
The Tomáš Baťa Memorial can be reached on foot from both the bus station and the railway station in 10 to 15 minutes. For timing a visit, two specific starting points and an approximate walking time for each are therefore provided.
