Arad: History, Culture and the Mureș Landscape

Arad can be viewed on several levels: through historical institutions and buildings, through notable exhibition venues, and through the landscape along the Mureș. For a clear travel plan, it is worth considering these topics separately, as they lead to different forms of history, architecture, nature and movement.

History

The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie presents a chronological and thematic account of the history of Arad from the 12th century to 1919. The combination of chronological structure and thematic focuses provides two approaches to the city’s history without reducing the period to a single era. The Cetatea Aradului is a late Vauban-style fortress with a star-shaped layout and six bastions. Construction work on the Cetatea Aradului began in 1762 and lasted more than 20 years. Efforts related to the Cetatea Aradului have not yet been completed.

Culture

The Palatul Cultural currently houses the headquarters of the county museum and the State Philharmonic. Its neoclassical façade is accompanied by side wings in the style of the Italian Renaissance; the side facing the park is inspired by Gothic elements of Hunedoara Castle. The Parcul Reconcilierii contains the Statue of Liberty and, in its immediate vicinity, the 9-metre-high Arcul de Triumf. The triumphal arch depicts important figures from Romanian history; the work was created by sculptor Ioan Bolborea. The 38-metre-high Galeriile “Turnul de apă” was once the tallest building in the city of Arad. Today, it houses a permanent water exhibition as well as numerous changing art exhibitions. The Neological Synagogue has an interior in the Spanish-Moorish style, with rich, colourful geometric ornamentation and an organ considered to be of high quality.

Nature

The Parcul Natural Lunca Mureșului extends from Arad along the Mureș River to the Hungarian border and covers 17,455 ha. For spatial orientation, the river course, the border connection and the area size can be considered together here.

Activities

On the Mureș River, the “Arad-Pecica” route is designed for eco-tours by canoe or kayak, is 25 km long and can be completed in 3 to 4 hours. The “Arad-Pecica” cycle path begins at the Centrul de Vizitare Ceala near Municipiul Arad, ends at the Ferma de Bivoli in Pecica, and passes through forest and typical floodplain habitats along the Mureș River.
