Călinești comes into focus with Râncăciov Monastery: its first documented mention as a monastic institution is dated July 19, 1498.
Culture and History
Râncăciov Monastery is located 7 km north of the old Pitești–Bucharest road and east of the village of Râncăciov in the municipality of Călinești. The new church of Râncăciov Monastery was founded between June 10, 1647, and September 27, 1648, by Arsenie Şoimul and his wife Ana.
The church Biserica „Cuvioasa Paraschiva” of the former Schit Lacu Negru stands between hills at the edge of two lakes: the large and the small lake merge directly in front of the church. The present brick church Biserica „Cuvioasa Paraschiva” of the former Schit Lacu Negru was built in 1787 by Neagu and Paraschiva after an earlier wooden construction phase.
The Râncăciov – Dealul Olarului archaeological site is a settlement with phases from the Eneolithic, the Bronze Age, the Hallstatt period, the La Tène period and the Middle Ages, including the 14th century. The wooden church in Cârstieni bears the dedications „Sf. Apostol Toma” and „Sf. Voievozi”, is known as „a Turcului” and dates from 1758–1759. This wooden church, also known as „a Turcului”, is listed as stop 5 on the tourist route of the wooden churches.
The wooden church „Sf. Apostoli Petru şi Pavel” in Călinești has oak beams joined together using the so-called dovetail system, as well as a masonry base. The old church of Gorgani Monastery was moved in 1988 from the cemetery of the village of Drăghicești to a nearby hill and restored. The church of Gorgani Monastery, known as „Biserica Doamnii Bălașii”, is dated to the period 1720–1740.
Comparing the dates side by side makes it possible to distinguish between the founding of the new monastery church in the 17th century, the church buildings of the 18th century and the significantly older settlement phases at the archaeological site. The wooden churches complement this comparison with their construction methods and the dedications handed down through tradition.
