Roman: Museums, Churches and Parcul Municipal Roman

Parcul Municipal Roman is a recreational area dating from the 19th century that emerged from the former Teiuş Forest and has been designated a legally protected landscape reserve since 1994. The park is home to 38 tree and shrub species of different origins from Europe, Eurasia, North America and Asia. During the summer season, recreational boat trips can be arranged on the lake in Parcul Municipal Roman. The “Rotonda Personalităților”, also known as the Writers’ Rotunda, displays busts of Creangă, Eminescu, Sadoveanu, Alecsandri, Caragiale, Vlahuţă, Kogălniceanu, Miron Costin and Enescu, as well as a monument to the agronomist Ion Ionescu de la Brad.

Culture and History

The Muzeul de Istorie Roman was founded on 1 September 1957. It has two listed buildings, including Casa Nevruzzi, with Baroque architecture and ceiling paintings by Ludwig Branner dating from 1884. The Muzeul de Artă Roman houses more than 1,000 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture and decorative art. The thematic focus of these works is related to the Roman region. Since 1970, the museum has been located in Casa Roiu at Strada Mihai Eminescu No. 3, a neoclassical listed building constructed at the end of the 19th century.

The present-day Church of Sfânta Paraschiva in the Complexul Arhiepiscopal Roman was preceded by an earlier church with the same patron saint; the earlier church is mentioned in a document from 1408. The present-day church is known for its interior paintings. The Biserica Armenească is a stone church built in 1609. The Biserica Domnească, also called Biserica Sfinții Voievozi, acquired its present form in 1695. Casa Celibidache is the birthplace of the conductor Sergiu Celibidache, who was born there in 1912. The New Fortress of Roman played an important role in the defence system of Moldavia over the course of time.

Nature, Museums and Recreation

Another perspective is offered by the Muzeul de Științe Naturale Roman, with more than 30,000 specimens. The museum presents its collections, among other things, through interactive museum education workshops. In 2021, the Complexul Sportiv și de Agrement “Moldova” had three swimming pools: an Olympic-size pool, a medium-sized swimming pool and a children’s pool.

Historic buildings, collections, religious buildings and park activities offer different focal points.
