Malachov: Gorge, Nature Trails and Hotels

Between Malachov and the settlement of Ortúty, the Malachovský potok carved a 200 m long gorge into the andesite through deep erosion. The rocky slopes are 15 m high. This is where the view opens onto a place where nature, traditional culture and various forms of active recreation exist side by side.

Nature

Malachov has several nature trail routes. Horná roveň, a protected natural area and also a natural monument, is located along these trails. The Pod Skalkou recreation meadow is a starting point for Malachov’s nature trails. The Malachovské skalky protected area is also located in the wider regional surroundings of Malachov. Above the valley of the Malachovský potok, it preserves a geologically significant site with bizarre rock formations as well as thermophilic flora and fauna.

Culture

The Evangelical a.-v. primary school in Malachov is an important landmark of the municipality; Andrej Braxatoris Sládkovič founded it in 1858. Another cultural site is Kováčovie dom, a museum of traditional living in Malachov. In 2012, Kováčovie dom was reconstructed and established as a museum.

A traditional Fašiangy celebration is part of the local customs. During the celebration, young men from the municipality, dressed in costumes, still go from house to house singing. Amateur theatre also has a long history in Malachov: it has existed since 1931. The theatre groups include Malá Chova from Malachov. A historic postal road also connected Banská Bystrica and Kremnica.

Activities

At the edge of Malachov is the modernised Medvedica ski centre, with a snack bar, artificial snowmaking and five lifts. The cycling network in and around Malachov includes the Badínska trasa and a connecting route between Malachov and Horné Pršany. The published cycling network also includes the blue-marked Bystrický circuit, numbered 2567.
