Culture

Among Vlkanová’s preserved cultural monuments is a reconstructed Renaissance manor house from the 17th century with preserved loopholes. The manor house originally served as a guard post during the Ottoman incursions; the historian and literary critic Alexander Matuška was born in the building. Vlkanová also has a small branch church built by local residents themselves. It has a single-nave interior with a massive portal in a fully glazed entrance wall.

Hiking

The eighth stage of the Barborská cesta from Zvolen to Vlkanová is 23.5 km long. The ninth stage begins at Fort Geronimo in Vlkanová and follows marked hiking trails towards Banská Bystrica, including via Kozlinec and to the Vartovka Observatory. This stage is described as easy to moderately demanding.

In the vicinity of Vlkanová is the Badínsky prales educational trail, which is listed for Badín and Vlkanová. It is 1 km long, takes about 1 hour, includes two stops and is considered easy.

Nature

The Badínsky prales national nature reserve in Badín is also located in the vicinity of Vlkanová. Covering 30.03 hectares, the reserve protects original climax forest communities of the beech zone in the Kremnica Mountains and includes all three fundamental development phases of European primeval forests.

To protect the reserve, entry to Badínsky prales in the vicinity of Vlkanová is permitted only as part of excursions attended by staff of the Poľana Protected Landscape Area Administration.

Cycling and Water

The FAMILY TRAIL between Banská Bystrica and Zvolen reaches Vlkanová via blue cycle route No. 2565 and a forest track along the railway line. The 21 km FAMILY TRAIL runs over flat terrain and is suitable for families with children as well as recreational and Sunday cyclists.

The Geronimo water sports camp is located at the entrance to Vlkanová, where cyclists are just as welcome as water sports enthusiasts. Fort Geronimo in Vlkanová is a camp for canoeists and other river tourers situated on the Hron River, offering drinks and food by the river.

The Vlkanová–Hronsek cycle route begins in the centre of Vlkanová and runs mostly on unpaved surfaces. The BB–Môlča–Vlkanová–BB route passes through the Mičinské lúky and below Kozlinec, then descends through the Peťovská Valley to Vlkanová.

Transport Connections

Vlkanová is connected to the rest of Slovakia by a third-class road to a first-class road at the intersection near Badín, as well as by the electrified Zvolen–Banská Bystrica railway line.
