Vieska: Church, History and Educational Trail to Šášov Castle

In the Vieska district of the municipality of Ladomerská Vieska stands the Church of Christ the King. It was probably built as early as the 13th century and was originally dedicated to All Saints. A parish and a church in Vieska are documented for the years 1332 to 1337.

Culture and History

Part of the tower and the presbytery with a polygonal ending have been preserved from the original Gothic church building. The presbytery has a net-vaulted ceiling dated 1481. At the end of the 15th century, the original Gothic church was rebuilt in the Gothic style, rebuilt again in 1552, and extended with a transept in 1928.

A crypt beneath the church contains the tomb of Žigmund Dóczy. Above the portal of the original Gothic presbytery is his circular, wooden and polychrome epitaph from 1647; it bears his coat of arms and a surrounding Latin inscription. A late Gothic bell from the original church furnishings has survived to this day; it probably dates from the first half of the 16th century.

Work is currently underway on the church of the Ladomerská Vieska parish; the restoration covers the roof, façade and interior. In the Church of Christ the King, a consecration cross has been uncovered on the western interior wall of the Gothic presbytery; it is a wall painting from the late 14th century.

Vieska was a border settlement on the edge of the two historic estates of Beòadický and Šášovský. Vieska is documented in records from 1352. Historically, residents of Vieska traded fruit and vegetables in Kremnica.

The municipality of Ladomerská Vieska lies in the Žiar Basin and extends to the northwestern slopes of the Štiavnica Mountains. It is situated at a crossroads of roads in the main Bratislava–Košice–Trenčín corridor. The municipality's cadastral territory includes the main railway line toward Bratislava and Zvolen.
