Kopernica: Nature Trails, Mountain Landscape and Historical Traces
Kopernica lies in the western group of the Kremnické vrchy, in a narrow, long valley of the Kopernický potok. The village is part of the Kremnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area and thus combines a distinctly shaped mountain landscape with preserved historical traces. For orientation in the area, both the paths through the landscape and the buildings and details of the village are significant.
Landscape and Nature
As a result of intensive mining activity, the forests above Kopernica are still crossed by a dense network of roads and paths. South of the village lies Horná Klapa, a rocky promontory that serves as a natural lookout point. It is not unusual to encounter red deer and roe deer in the surrounding forests. Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries also grow around Kopernica.
Hiking and Cycling
The locally marked trails include the Kopernica–Lutila–Dolná Klapa–Jazierko Slobodné hiking route and the marked Kopernica–Slaská–Jazierko Slobodné route. Both routes lead from Kopernica to other named points in the nearby landscape. In addition, the Pohronsko–kremnický cycling loop runs from Lúčky via Kopernica to Lutila. The loop is 49 km long, classified as SPORT and suitable for road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes. Above Kopernica, it follows another climb and offers a view of the surrounding landscape there. Within the village area, marked hiking trails are therefore combined with a SPORT-category cycling route for road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes.
Culture and Villagescape
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin the Bishop is the oldest historical building in Kopernica. It is a Gothic structure dating from the 13th century. The main altar of Saint Martin dates from 1743 and is designed in the Baroque style. In addition to the church, several typical German houses with passageways have been preserved in Kopernica to this day. Together, these place a medieval religious building, Baroque furnishings and preserved house forms from different historical contexts side by side in the villagescape.
