Dekýš: Hiking Trails, Lakes and a Peaceful Character

Dekýš combines a quiet village setting with trails leading into the countryside and a rich, multifaceted history. Hiking trails run through Dekýš toward Sitno, Počúvadlo and the surrounding lakes. At the same time, the village retains its peaceful character throughout the year and is conveniently located for hiking.

Landscape

Three quarters of Dekýš’s cadastral area is covered by forest. Oak and beech stands are typical of the forests in the area, while the flora is a mixture of mountain plants and warmth-loving species. Dekýš lies in the southern part of the Štiavnické vrchy, in an erosion-formed depression at the headwaters of the Dekýšsky potok.

Near Dekýš, 4 km southwest of the village, lies the Jabloňovský Roháč state forest reserve, also known as Almášsky Roháč. Red deer occur in the area around Dekýš; the Sitno roe deer (Capreolus sitnensis) lives in the Sitno Nature Reserve.

Water and Trails

Počúvadlianske Lake is the largest lake in the Štiavnické vrchy. It was created according to plans by S. Mikovíny between 1738 and 1740. Most of the lakes around Dekýš were also artificially created for ore mining. They have historical and technical value and are also connected with the hiking trails that run from Dekýš toward the lakes.

Culture and History

Dekýš was first mentioned in writing in 1270, when it was known as Gukes. The area was already inhabited in the Stone Age; a settlement of the Linear Pottery culture with Želiezovce-type pottery and an idol find is known here. A Roman-period settlement is also known in the territory of Dekýš.

Traditional folk art in Dekýš included making agricultural tools and furniture from locally available wood. The village’s embroidery also developed in its own distinctive way: at first, it used small cross, lattice and dot motifs; after the First World War, floral ornaments were added.

The local architectural heritage includes two churches. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Dekýš was built in 1805 and extended with a transept in 1924. It is in good condition and is used for religious purposes. The Evangelical Church in Dekýš was built in 1924 in a neoclassical style influenced by the Secession. It too is in good condition and is used for religious purposes.
