Kozelník: Baroque Bell Tower and Historical Traces

Kozelník combines tangible buildings, historical boundary markers, and a cycling route that links the village with Banská Štiavnica and Hronská Breznica. At the center is the freestanding baroque bell tower: it was built in the 18th century on a hill between the houses. This refers to a structure that is clearly distinct from the rest of the church building and visibly occupies its own place in the village landscape.

Culture

The bell tower was granted special heritage protection status in 1963. That year, it was entered into the Central Register of Monuments as a national cultural monument. A more recent structural measure is also part of the village’s present-day appearance: the access road and the area around the bell tower in Kozelník were repaired in 2026.

Two unusual features belong to the church’s architectural language. The mast of the church in Kozelník is shaped like a double cross, while the church itself has the shape of a small boat. Both forms give the building a clearly identifiable external profile, without requiring any further interpretation.

History

Another historical building is the late Baroque coaching inn. It stands in the western part of the village on the main road below the forest and was built in the 1790s. In the 18th century, the coaching inn served as a post station where the horses of stagecoaches were changed. Its location and former function are therefore just as much a part of the village’s history as its late Baroque construction period.

The boundary stone in Kozelník marks two historical borders. On the one hand, it marks the boundary between the Hont and Zvolen counties and, on the other, the end of the so-called Terra banensium, that is, the Banská Land. Another testimony to the region’s economic history is the historical iron hammer mill. It served as a supporting ironworks operation for the Banská Štiavnica mining area.

Cycling

Alongside its historical traces, Kozelník can also be situated through the Štiavnická Anča cycling route. The route runs from the center of Banská Štiavnica through Kozelník to Hronská Breznica. Its course therefore connects a starting point in Banská Štiavnica with a destination in Hronská Breznica and explicitly includes Kozelník between them. The Štiavnická Anča cycling route is also suitable for less experienced cyclists.
