Ilija: Hotel and Nature at Sitno
Ilija lies in the Štiavnické Mountains at the northern foot of the Sitno massif and directly within the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The village therefore has a close geographical connection to Sitno: the summit of Sitno lies within the cadastral territory of Ilija.
Nature
Several protected areas shape the landscape. The Pralesy Slovenska–Sitno Nature Reserve includes parcels in the cadastral territory of Ilija. The Sitno National Nature Reserve extends into the southwest of Ilija’s municipal territory. In addition, the Sitno site belongs to the Natura 2000 area SKUEV0216.
The conservation objectives of Pralesy Slovenska–Sitno include beech and beech-fir flower forests of European importance. The protected area provides a habitat for rare and protected species. A tourist-marked route runs within reach of the western edge of the Sitno primeval forest site.
Trails
The Andrej Kmeť educational trail was also established in the territory of Ilija. A 4.3-kilometre route leads from Ilija, marked green at first and then blue; the walking time is two hours. The stated distance and sequence of markings provide a clear framework for the time required and the course of the hike.
A renovated wooden lookout tower dating from 1727 stands on the summit of Sitno. The lookout tower houses a nature conservation information centre, which is open to the public from May to September.
History
The year 1266 is regarded as the beginning of Ilija’s documented history. Sitno Castle also connects several periods: it was built in the 13th century on the site of a prehistoric fortified settlement and has been a ruin since the beginning of the 18th century.
Culture
Ilija is home to the Church of Saint Giles, a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century. It stands on a slope above Ilija and is not enclosed by a fence. Its portal is late Romanesque and decorated with ornaments featuring plant and animal motifs.
This makes it possible, especially when planning a budget-conscious trip, to compare the specific components of an offer side by side without assuming any particular amenities or availability. Before booking, it is worth taking one final look at the applicable conditions of the selected offer and the occupancy shown there. When travelling with several people, occupancy deserves particular attention so that the offers being compared are based on the same criteria. For comparison, travellers can view the respective offers side by side and check whether the displayed location, accommodation type and occupancy match their own details. The price components should likewise be shown separately, for example whether additional costs are listed. The conditions should be checked in particular for payment deadlines, possible cancellation rules and the restrictions applicable to the offer. For offers with Ilija as the destination, travellers can also check the stated location, accommodation type, occupancy and included services separately. Comparing the price components as well as the payment and cancellation conditions makes it clear which details actually belong to the respective offer.
