Hotels in Dolná Lehota: Nature at the Vajskovský Waterfall

Dolná Lehota lies in the valley of the Vajskovský stream. The municipality is located in the protection zone of the Low Tatras National Park, combining a clearly defined natural setting with historical and cultural traces. Between the Skalka Nature Reserve, the trails through the Vajskovská Valley and the memorial sites associated with mining and avalanches, the town presents a diverse picture.

Nature

The Skalka National Nature Reserve covers 2,659.81 hectares of habitats ranging from the montane to the alpine zone and was designated in 1997. It is partly located in the cadastral areas of Jasenie and Dolná Lehota. Alpine plant communities occur in the summit areas of Skalka at an altitude of 1,980 metres. The Skalka area is also home to Tatra chamois, marmots, brown bears, lynxes and red deer.

Hiking and Cycling

The Vajskovský Waterfall is a prominent landscape feature. An approximately 2 km-long hiking trail leads there from Pálenica. The waterfall plunges 9 metres over a rugged rock face at an altitude of approximately 1,200 metres. The Vajskovská Valley educational trail ends at the Vajskovský Waterfall, as does the green-marked hiking trail. In addition to hiking, the Vajskovská Valley is also suitable for cycling.

At its first information panel near Dve vody, the Vajskovská Valley educational trail presents the history of mining, particularly antimony mining in this area, as well as the memory of the avalanche in the nearby Kulichova Valley. The Medveďou cestičkou educational trail can be accessed via turn-offs from the main roads connecting Dolná Lehota with Krpačovo and Krpačovo with Tále. This educational trail covers historical, mining, Pro Silva, forestry and hunting-related topics.

History and Culture

The settlement of Dolná Lehota was founded in 1358 in the territory of the Ľupča estate by the hereditary reeve Petrík from Predajná. After local mining resumed in the 19th century, antimony ore was processed in Vajsková. From the 18th to the 20th century, Dolná Lehota was one of the so-called lace-making villages.

The townscape features two religious buildings from different periods. The Classicist Chapel of Saint John the Baptist dates from 1818. The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Dolná Lehota was built in 1914; its interior contains murals created in 1915 by the prominent Spiš painter Jozef Hanula.

Memorial sites are also among the area’s historical points of reference. At Črmné, on the way to Krpačovo, there is an SNP memorial dedicated to the victims of the Second World War. A memorial in the Kulichova Valley commemorates the avalanche disaster of 1956, in which sixteen forestry workers lost their lives.

Water and Winter

Part of the Krpačovo recreational centre lies within the municipality of Dolná Lehota; swimming and boating are possible there. Krpačovo has artificially snow-covered ski slopes with a stated total length of 7 km. In winter, Dolná Lehota offers extensive opportunities for cross-country skiing excursions.
