Nature

The highest parts of the Heľpa area lie along the ridge of the Low Tatras in Nízke Tatry National Park. The southern part of the cadastral area extends into the Veľká Stožka State Nature Reserve.

Hiking and trails

Every year, on the first Saturday in August, the hiking event Výstup na Veľký bok is organised in Heľpa by hikers in cooperation with the municipality. Route A of the Výstup na Veľký bok starts in Heľpa’s square and leads to the summit of Veľký bok. A less demanding option starts at the Priehyba saddle; participants are taken there from Heľpa by bus.

The educational trail Náučný chodník chotárom obce Heľpa is an 8.3-kilometre circular route that can take up to 3.5 hours. The educational trail Chotárom obce Heľpa can be started in the village centre; parking is available at Jarmočisko. In April 2026, the educational trail had new information boards and offered views of the surrounding landscape.

Every year on 31 December, Heľpa hosts the winter hike Silvestrovský výstup na Veľkú Vápenicu. For planning a day in Heľpa, hiking trails and hiking events can be distinguished according to their fixed dates and route characteristics. For the trails described, the starting point, route length, possible duration and difficulty level each represent different planning details; the hiking events, by contrast, are defined by their calendar dates. This keeps the date, route and starting point as separate reference points.

Culture and history

The Horehronské dni spevu a tanca in Heľpa take place every year on the last weekend in June. Traditional crafts and ethnographic exhibitions are presented at the event; traditional cuisine is also showcased.

Heľpa has been protected as a heritage zone since 1992. This zone is characterised by originally block-like wooden log houses, mostly positioned with their gables facing the street; traditional shingle-roof details also form part of its architectural character.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Heľpa is a late Baroque church built in 1800. It has a wooden Louis Seize pulpit from the early 19th century. In January 2026, the mines of Vyšné Poľany were made accessible.

Cycling and getting there

The route Z Heľpy cez Pohorelú na Priehybu is a 23.6-kilometre circular tour of medium difficulty. It starts at a car park in Heľpa and leads to Priehyba, a connecting point between Liptov and Horehronie. There is an electric bicycle charging station in Heľpa’s village square. Heľpa can be reached by bus or train.

The hiking trails differ in their starting points, lengths, durations and difficulty levels; the cultural events mentioned take place on fixed days. This makes it possible to consider the details separately without mixing trail planning with accommodation decisions.
