Podbrezová: Churches and Ironmaking History

Podbrezová combines sacred architecture with the history of iron metallurgy and current railway topics. Its range extends from historic churches and industrial heritage to an annual folk festival, football matches and a railway site currently under development. The town’s history therefore brings together different periods and functions, which can be examined separately in detail.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen of Hungary in Podbrezová was built between 1890 and 1892. It is a single-nave Neo-Gothic building with stained-glass windows made in 1892 at the Forgó and Partners art workshop in Budapest. It can be regarded as an important representative cultural and historical monument; at the same time, it documents the local ironmaking traditions.

The Church of Saint George also features notable details. Its main altarpiece depicts Saint George fighting the dragon; Jozef Murgaš painted it in 1893. The Roman Catholic Gothic Church of Saint George in Podbrezová-Lopej also has a massive square bell tower. It is surrounded by a wall dating from the 17th century.

Events

Podbrezová commemorates the church’s knightly tradition in Lopej each year with the Feast of Saint George, held on 24 April or on the last Sunday in April. The festival includes an allegorical knights’ procession, an extensive cultural programme and a folk market. Sporting events take place at the Zelpo aréna in Podbrezová: FK Železiarne Podbrezová organises I Liga, Slovak Cup, friendly and international football matches there.

Industrial History

The Metallurgical Museum of Železiarne Podbrezová presents an exhibition on the history of iron metallurgy in Podbrezová and the surrounding area. The outdoor exhibition features preserved metallurgical machinery and specialised equipment from Podbrezová’s industrial facilities dating from the mid-20th century, illustrating the production technology of that time.

The museum’s subject matter also includes the “Keltská kultúra” exhibition, which opened to the public in 2002. It presents the results of archaeological research from Hrádok near Horná Lehota. These findings indicate that Celts lived there more than 2,000 years ago.

Transport and Development

According to the 2026 timetable, the Šánske–Chvatimech line is currently out of regular service. Only operational or special trains running at a special fare operate there. At the same time, a Čiernohronská železnica site with a boarding station for a narrow-gauge railway is currently being developed between the main road and the Hron.
