Bzovík combines a fortified monastic history, a church with several architectural and furnishing periods, as well as specific cycling and hiking routes. Key points of interest include Bzovík Fortress, the Church of St. Stephen the King, and the routes described.

Culture and History

Bzovík Castle was converted into a fortress between 1530 and 1546, with a high surrounding wall, four corner bastions, and a moat. Bzovík Fortress is one of Slovakia’s oldest architectural monuments and was originally established around 1131 as a Benedictine monastery. Guided and self-guided visits were available at the fortified Bzovík monastery. Guided tours were possible on Saturdays and Sundays at 14:00 and 17:00, as well as on weekdays by prior arrangement, and lasted approximately 30 minutes.

Another historical point of interest is the Church of St. Stephen the King, a late Gothic–early Renaissance church with a Baroque interior. The interior of the Church of St. Stephen the King includes a main altar from 1762 and side altars from 1744. The church was built in 1606 as an extension of an earlier chapel. The Lourdes Grotto, Jaskynka Lurdskej Panny Márie, is located next to the Church of St. Stephen the King. A lime tree approximately 300 years old also stands in front of the Catholic church in Bzovík.

Cycling

The Hontianska Cycle Route 011 is a 50.8 km-long paved road cycling route of medium difficulty. It connects Krupina and Detva and runs through the Hont region. Its route begins at the ruins of the former Benedictine monastery above Bzovík, descends into the village center, and then turns toward Krupina.

Hiking

The Krupina–Uňatín–Čabrad educational trail is a self-guided, linear, year-round hiking trail that can be used in both directions, with a focus on natural history and cultural history. One variant of the Krupina–Uňatín–Čabrad educational trail begins at Bzovík railway station. Both names refer to the same educational trail, while the variant identifies the railway station as a separate starting point.
