Drážovce – Wine Tradition, Landscape and Cycling Routes

Drážovce combines a historic wine-growing tradition with a landscape in a protected landscape area and several signposted cycling routes. The “Cez tri kopce a stovky viníc” cycling route runs through Drážovce, Ladzany, Sebechleby, H. Nemce and Kráľovce-Krnišov.

Nature and Landscape

The entire municipal area of Drážovce lies within the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The village stretches along the banks of the Klastavský potok stream. The geological substrate also contributes to the local landscape forms: it consists predominantly of Neovolcanic rocks, including pyroclastic deposits, various andesites and dacites.

In the landscape around Drážovce, valleys alternate with hills, while forests alternate with meadows and grazing areas, inviting visitors to go for walks. During walks around Drážovce, visitors may, with a little luck, find mushrooms, wild strawberries, blackberries and medicinal herbs. This means that different landscape areas and natural opportunities for foraging come together within a small area.

History and Wine

The historical record of Drážovce dates back to the Middle Ages. The village appears under the name Dras in the founding charter of Bzovík Abbey from 1135. Drážovce also has a documented historic wine-growing tradition.

In the vicinity of Drážovce, historically preserved wine cellars can be found in the “Vínny hrb” area. Their original tuff-stone architecture has been preserved, and visitors can tour the cellars.

Culture

One of the village’s defining buildings is the Evangelical church in Drážovce. It is a towerless Classicist church dating from 1843. The church contains a stone Renaissance baptismal font from the first half of the 17th century. It also has an altar with column architecture and Rococo ornamentation from the late 18th century. The Renaissance baptismal font, Classicist architecture and the Rococo ornamentation of the altar thus come from different periods and are united in one sacred building.

Drážovce is also home to a wooden bell tower from the late 18th century. Together with the Evangelical church, it adds another independent historic structure to the village’s appearance.

Cycling Routes

In addition to the “Cez tri kopce a stovky viníc” route, a 29-kilometre section of the GREENWAY cycling route runs from Drážovce via Sebechleby to Krnišov. Another option is the Drážovce–Sebechleby–Krnišov–Krupina–Drážovce loop route, which begins in Drážovce. The routes mentioned therefore differ both in their course and in their form: the GREENWAY section runs from Drážovce via Sebechleby to Krnišov, while the loop route returns to Drážovce via Krupina.
