Hontianske Tesáre: Nature, History and Hotels

Hontianske Tesáre lies on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská planina. The Štiavnica stream flows through the municipality, while the international E77 road passes through the village, connecting Budapest with Warsaw. Between gorges, protected areas, historic buildings and regional traditions, this creates a diverse picture of this Slovak destination.

Nature

The Šinkov salaš Nature Reserve protects the rare and endangered spring pheasant’s eye (Adonis vernalis), a protected plant species in Slovakia. A population numbering several thousand specimens grows there on formerly mown mountain meadows and along the edges of oak forests. The area is subject to the fifth level of nature protection.

The Tesárska Gorge is a short canyon in predominantly volcanic sediments originating from the Štiavnica stratovolcano. Its cross-bedding documents chaotic sedimentation typical of river deltas and suggests that the area was once a shallow sea. There are four waterfalls in the gorge; the third upstream is approximately eight metres high. The waterfalls are particularly visible in spring during the snowmelt.

Trails and Views

The observation tower in Hontianske Tesáre is open to visitors. From there, views extend over Hontianske Tesáre and the wider surroundings of the Hont region. From the municipal office, the tower can be reached on foot via a marked route approximately 1.5 kilometres long. The route initially follows an asphalt road and then continues along a dirt track.

Geological Traces

The fossil site is located in the cadastral area of Dvorníky, part of the municipality of Hontianske Tesáre. Water erosion exposes layers of marine sediments there. The exposed fine-grained sandstone layers contain numerous fossils.

The Tesárske dúpence are rock chambers approximately 5 to 6 metres in size and 180 to 200 centimetres high. They probably served as hiding places for the inhabitants from the Turks.

History

The remains of the Romanesque Church of St Michael stand on a small elevation in the Hontianske Tesáre–Dvorníky cadastral area, in the Patkôš district on the right bank of the Štiavnica. It belonged to a series of religious buildings that once lined the important imperial-royal postal road known as the Magna Via. The former church was built in the 12th century and fell into decay in the 19th century. Archaeological investigations have identified Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque construction phases.

The area’s more distant history is also supported by archaeological evidence: finds in Hontianske Tesáre indicate continuous settlement from the hillfort period through the Middle Ages. The village is also associated with Karol Braxatoris, an evangelical pastor. He was a religious writer and author of hymns and is buried in Hontianske Tesáre.

Culture and Wine

Å ipice is home to an evangelical church, a Classicist building dating from 1801. A freestanding bell tower stands beside it. The Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was originally Gothic and dates from the second half of the 14th century; it was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1722 to 1728.

Numerous wine cellars carved into the rock have been preserved in Dvorníky; they were used to store wine. In the past, people in Hontianske Tesáre followed the custom of pooling wine for the pastor after the grape harvest.

Events

Hontiansky jarmok and Gulášmajster 2026 is a cultural and social event dedicated to preserving, presenting and promoting the traditional culture of the Hont region. It combines a fair with a goulash-cooking competition, which will take place in Hontianske Tesáre for the 19th time in 2026. Visitors can take part in creative workshops focused on traditional skills, including textile techniques, blacksmithing, wax-candle making and bobbin lace-making.
