Horný Badín: Hotels, Nature Trail and Traditional Architecture

Horný Badín is known for its traditional architecture. The village combines a clearly recognizable historical development with a location between two stream valleys and a nature trail that runs through the settlement.

Nature

The Uňatín–Horný Badín–Čabradský Vrbovok–Čabraď Castle nature trail passes through Horný Badín. It is designed as a self-guided walking route that can be used in both directions in summer and winter and is in good condition. The walk is therefore not restricted to one direction or one season; the defining features remain those of the trail itself.

Horný Badín lies on a flat ridge between the valley of the Jalšovík stream, a tributary of the Krupinica, and the valley of the Vrbovok stream in the Krupinská výšina uplands. The steep slopes of the Jalšovík stream valley are covered by a continuous oak forest. Thus, alongside the trail, the precise terrain and the dense oak woodland are also among the defining landscape features of the village.

History and Culture

The settlement of Horný Badín was established in the 14th century in the cadastral area of the municipality of Dolný Badín. Horný Badín is documented under the name Bagyon for the year 1391. From 1773 onward, the settlement is documented as Horný Badín; its Hungarian name is Felsöbágyon. These forms of the name reflect the historical development of the village over several centuries without replacing its current name.

The sights of Horný Badín include an original chamber. There is a bell tower in the centre. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands between two lime trees. Horný Badín also has a functioning wooden mill in private ownership. A commemorative plaque for the literary historian Jozef Ambruš is located at the Horný Badín cultural centre.

Fragments of Hontian architecture have also been preserved in the old houses. The older houses of Horný Badín are built entirely of wood. There are also beehives in Horný Badín. Historical architectural forms, individual features of the village and the beehives that still exist today thus stand alongside one another, each with its own character.
