Dolný Badín: Hotels, Nature Trail, Nature and Culture

Dolný Badín lies in a basin framed to the north by the Javorie Mountains, to the east and south by the Cerová vrchovina and the Čabradská vrchovina, and to the west by the Štiavnica Mountains and the Krupina Mountains.

Nature

The steep slopes of the Krupinica and Jalšovík valleys are covered by continuous oak forest. There are numerous fruit trees in Dolný Badín and its surroundings; distinctive, spreading linden trees stand around the church and cemetery. The natural area also includes Čabradský hradný vrch hill and its surroundings. Together, they form a national nature reserve known in Slovakia for its particularly rich variety of reptiles. In particular, many grass snakes live there.

Hiking and Cycling

The Badínska dolina valley west of Dolný Badín offers opportunities for hiking and more challenging cycling. The Uňatín-Horný Badín-Čabraď nature trail runs through the municipality. Its total length is 13.3 km, of which 2.6 km runs through the municipality. Along the Uňatín-Horný Badín-Čabraď nature trail, hikers can see a spring, Žabinec and viewpoints.

Geography

A state road runs through Dolný Badín and branches off behind the village towards Drienovo and Selce. Access to nearby Čabrad Castle is possible by car as far as the hamlet of Konské, followed by a walk of approximately 45 minutes. From Čabradský Vrbovok, a field path leads there on foot in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Culture

Archaeological finds show that people were already living in the area of present-day Dolný Badín in the Stone Age. The first written mention of Dolný Badín dates from 1135; at that time, the settlement was called Badun.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Dolný Badín was originally Gothic, was renovated in 1754, received a Baroque vault in 1781 and was completely rebuilt after 1876. Its main altar is Neo-Romanesque and dates from around 1900. The pulpit is Baroque and dates from 1754.

Traditional culture also has its place in Dolný Badín. The Badínsky Bál was scheduled for 30 January 2026 at 19:30 as a traditional ball with entertainment and a cultural experience. A local folklore group performs at local and regional level. Members of this group preserved the original costume from Badín, known as the “krekáčsky” costume.
