Lovinobaňa is a place whose history can be traced through a range of distinct, clearly identifiable landmarks. Mining is a central theme, complemented by sacred architecture, memorials, events, water activities and regional cuisine.

History

Mining in Lovinobaňa is documented for the years 1247 to 1250 and primarily involved silver. In the Middle Ages, iron ore was also mined in the Lovinobaňa area; two hammer mills were in operation there until the 17th century. The Losonczy family is also part of this historical context: from the early 14th century onward, the family showed an interest in mining and opened new mine workings in Lovinobaňa during the 14th century. A later testimony is the seal of Lovinobaňa from 1667. It depicts mining tools and is considered an unusual example of Slovak sphragistics.

Culture

An important cultural landmark of the town is the Evangelical Church of Lovinobaňa. It was built in 1863 in the late Classical style on the site of an originally Gothic church. Its altar features a painting of Christ on the Sea from 1860 by Peter Michal Bohúň. The church also still contains a Rieger organ made in Budapest in 1907.

The historical memory of the town also includes the memorial plaque unveiled in Lovinobaňa in 1946. It commemorates the founding of the Revolutionary National Committee and the District Revolutionary National Committee and is registered as a national cultural monument. The cultural programme of Lovinobaňa includes the event “Deň obce”. The event “Dolovanie tradícií” is also part of the cultural programme.

Water

Near Lovinobaňa, the Ružiná Reservoir offers opportunities for swimming at beaches, water sports and fishing. The municipality of Lovinobaňa issues fishing licences; permission to fish is granted by the holder of the fishing rights in the respective fishing district. This means that the issuing of the fishing licence and the granting of fishing permission are handled by different authorities.

Regional Cuisine

A specific culinary trail leads to Monika Albertiová – Podplameník. Traditional dishes such as Koláče–zavináče, Podplameník and Čír soup are produced there. Čír soup was eaten mainly in Lovinobaňa, Mýtna and the neighbouring villages. Sales take place directly at the producer’s premises by prior arrangement.
