České Brezovo – Nature, Views and Churches

České Brezovo lies in the valley of the Poltarica, through which the Poltarica stream flows. More than 71 percent of the cadastral area of České Brezovo is covered by forest.

Nature

The “Rozhľadňa České Brezovo – Hrb” is intended to offer panoramic views of České Brezovo, Vaľkovo, Slaná Lehota, Poltár, Rimavská Sobota and the Stolické vrchy. The lookout tower was built as small-scale tourist infrastructure for public use by residents and visitors to České Brezovo. At the same time, the “Rozhľadňa České Brezovo – Hrb” is designed as a 14.5-metre-high, four-storey lookout tower.

The Hrb lookout area includes a well-maintained rest area suitable for families with children. A visitors’ book is located on the top level of the lookout tower. The pavilion at the “Altánok pri studničke” spring is a completed rest area for residents and visitors.

Hiking

The 8.8-kilometre hiking route from Zlatno railway station to Jasenina runs for 5.8 kilometres through České Brezovo. It mostly follows unpaved paths; 7.5 of the 8.8 kilometres are designated as an unpaved road. An approximately 8-kilometre-long, easy hiking route from Zlatno to České Brezovo leads to the remains of the vanished České Brezovo Castle on Hradná stráň.

For the announced municipal hike to Jasenina, the start was scheduled for 9 a.m. in front of the České Brezovo municipal office. Refreshments were to be available for all participants at the lookout tower at the destination. The different route lengths, path types and the easy character of the shorter route provide specific information for comparing hiking plans.

Geographical location

České Brezovo has a railway stop on the line between Poltár and Utekáč. This line was put into operation in 1908.

Culture

The evangelical church in České Brezovo was consecrated on 15 October 1922 and built according to a design by the architect Milan Michal Harminc. Its exterior is designed in the Art Nouveau style with Neo-Romanesque elements. The evangelical church in České Brezovo continues to be used for services.

Vaľkovo belongs to České Brezovo. The evangelical church in Vaľkovo was built in 1836 on the site of a wooden Toleration church dating from 1786. The church contains an Art Nouveau altar from 1894 with Neoclassical elements by the sculptor J. Dien from Miskolc. The evangelical church in Vaľkovo also continues to be used for services.

České Brezovo holds the municipal day together with commemorative events marking the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising at the local sports ground. The municipality’s St Nicholas evening is a recurring pre-Christmas children’s event at the cultural centre, where children receive packets of sweets.

Books are available to readers at the B. Tablica municipal library. At the municipal pig-slaughter feast announced for 15 February 2025 in České Brezovo, visitors could sample traditional slaughter specialities.
