Cinobaňa: Archaeology, Churches and Glassmaking Tradition

Cinobaňa combines archaeological evidence, sacred architecture, a glassmaking tradition and varied landscapes. Between sites of the Kyjatice culture, historic churches, the glassworks in Katarínska Huta and the valley of the Cinobanský potok, different themes come together to show the town in all its diversity.

Culture and History

At the archaeological site of the Kyjatice culture, educational trails with information boards in text and images explain the work of archaeologists and illustrate the lives of our ancestors. There are also wooden shelters and pavilions that provide protection from the sun and rain. A recreation and rest area has also been made accessible at the same site for residents and visitors to the municipality.

At the foot of Strieborná Mountain lies a cremation burial site of the Kyjatice culture dating from the Middle and Late Bronze Age. The “Hľadanie stratených svetov” educational trail includes an interactive outdoor exhibition, complementing the archaeological interpretation on site.

The evangelical church in Turičky is part of the sacred heritage. Its presbytery, with valuable wall frescoes, depicts several biblical motifs. The wooden bell tower and the presbytery of the evangelical church in Turičky are listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic. The wooden bell tower is one of the oldest wooden sacred buildings and was already standing in 1371. The evangelical church in Cinobaňa also preserves a pewter bowl from the 14th century, which was used as part of the baptismal font in the 18th century.

Glass

Katarínska Huta has a glassmaking heritage featuring a glassworks founded in 1836. The glassworks resumed glass production under the name R-Glass in 2015. It continues the tradition of producing soda-lime beverage glass. This consists mainly of machine-made stemless stemware; to a lesser extent, stemware is also made by hand. Under the Katarínska Huta brand, R-Glass produces handmade mouth-blown glassware.

Nature

A pseudokarst cave is located beneath Hradisko on Strieborná Mountain. Hradisko on the mountain also preserves the remains of defensive walls from the Bronze Age. Thus, a natural feature and archaeological traces stand side by side on this mountain, without their respective characteristics being conflated.

The valley of the Cinobanský potok leads visitors along the stream to deciduous and coniferous forests, mountain meadows and springs. The area offers very good conditions for hiking. The alternation of the stream, forest, meadows and springs shapes the landscape of the valley.

Culinary Experiences

The “Cinobanský kotlík” competition is a recurring public goulash-cooking competition; another edition took place in Cinobaňa in 2025. A producer based in Katarínska Huta offers courses in Slovakia on baking traditional Novohrad sourdough bread.
