Breznička: Ipeľ Landscape, Churches and Hotels

Breznička lies at the confluence of the Banský potok stream and the Ipeľ River. The village therefore combines a distinctive river landscape with religious buildings, hillforts, protected natural areas, cycling routes and regional specialities.

Nature

Near Breznička, the Ipeľ forms a pronounced river bend. There, its floodplain narrows to 500 metres and forms a crescent-shaped or sigmoid form. In a preserved, meandering section of the Ipeľ in the cadastral area of Breznička, the adjoining meadows provide a habitat for the protected snake's-head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris).

The Ipeľská niva near Breznička was designated a private protected area. It includes Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests, marshy alder forests and the vegetation of shallow standing waters. A protected English oak with a trunk circumference of 379 centimetres and a height of 16 metres also stands near Breznička. West of Breznička, in the hamlet of Močiar, there is a protected English oak that is approximately 350 years old and was placed under protection in 1996.

Culture and History

The Evangelical church in Breznička was built in 1862 in the late Classicist style. It is a late Classicist hall church; its tower stands in front of the main façade and dates from 1882.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Breznička was built between 1781 and 1785 in the late Baroque style and consecrated on 11 September 1785. It has a Classicist high altar dating from 1786 and a painting of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1807. Stone statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand beside its tower. The tower still contains bells acquired in 1797 and dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus and Mary.

At the eastern edge of Breznička lies the Intravilán hillfort. It has an oval ground plan and a ditch; ceramic finds from the 12th to the 14th century were discovered there. The nearby small hillfort area known as Hrádok lies about 1.2 kilometres south of Breznička on a wooded ridge above the Ipeľ. It has two ditches and an arc-shaped rampart. Atypical prehistoric pottery from the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture, dating from approximately the 10th to the 8th century BC, was found in the area.

Cycling Routes and Event

Route 5609 from Breznička to Kotmanová is 24.7 kilometres long, marked in green and rated difficult. Its course includes sections on asphalt, paved paths, trails, and field and forest tracks. Route 5609 also runs from Červeň to Breznička, continuing there above the cemetery along forest and field tracks.

A cycling educational trail from Lučenec via Poltár and Breznička to Málinec passes through Breznička. It features easy to moderately difficult terrain and is connected to marked hiking trails.

The Breznický Majáles is a regularly held folklore and sports day co-organised by the municipality. It includes the erection of a maypole, performances by folklore groups and heligonka players, and sporting events for children, young people and adults.

Local Specialities

Local specialities in Breznička and the surrounding area include Parovec. To prepare it, the liquid produced during fermentation is boiled with water, millet and salt. Nálesník is a potato lokša made from a dough containing potatoes, similar to the dough used for halušky. Fučka, made from mashed potatoes mixed with flour, is also a local speciality.
